Election 2020: We’ll be ruthless with miscreants, says Kan-Dapaah

The National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, has warned rabble-rousers that the police is ready to face them squarely on election day

Albert Kan-Dapaah, the National Security Minister, has served notice ahead of the 7 December elections that the security agencies will deal ruthlessly with any individuals, who will disturb the peace of the nation.

“Mr Speaker, there also seems to be a deliberate attempt by certain individuals to create a false notion of rising insecurity in the country, that, however, we will counter to these false notions, for instance, statistics suggest a reduction in crime level,” Kan-Dapaah told MPs during a briefing on the state of security in the nation ahead of the general polls.

“But I think Mr Speaker this false sense of insecurity is stem from deliberate politicisation of national security in the country, and that is one too many approaching the December election.

“An assessment of recent development in the political space reveals that the false sense of insecurity is fuelled by some politicians, and Mr Speaker I think this is unacceptable and must be condemned irrespective of where it is coming from,” the minister stressed.

Kan-Dapaah said despite the politicisation of state security, security personnel have remained resolute in ensuring a peaceful environment for Ghanaians.

“As the 2020 December 7 election approaches, we believe the country is confronted with a huge test in the area of election related violence giving the high stake involved,” he told the House.

Spate of robberies

In the past few months, Ghana has witnessed a number of robbery attacks, raising fears about security in the nation. Two persons have so far been killed in the Ashanti Region alone in the past two weeks.

In July, a Seventh Day Adventist Church member was robbed and gunned down in Kumasi. Four weeks ago, highway robbers attacked a bullion van at Manso, killing a cashier in the incident.
