Axim Sea Defence Wall 85% complete, fishing port 50% complete – project co-ordinators to Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo at the Axim Sea Defence Wall — Project co-ordinators brief President Akufo-Addo on site on the Axim Sea Defence Wall and Landing Site projects

President Akufo-Addo inspected ongoing works at the site of the Axim Sea Defence Wall and the Axim Landing Site on Tuesday 18 August 2020, day one of his working visit to the Western Region.

During his first inspection, of the state of works on the sea defence wall, which is being undertaken by Makam Plant Hire Ltd (MPH), the project co-ordinator told President Akufo-Addo that it is expected the project will be completed in four years.

However, construction is ahead of schedule, with the sea defence wall now 85% complete: about 4.2 kilometres of the five-kilometre wall stands finished. The project co-ordinator assured the president that the project will be finished on schedule.

It will be recalled that on Sunday 9 September 2018, after the Kundum Festival, President cut the sod for the construction of the Axim Sea Defence Wall, in fulfilment of a pledge he made to the people of Axim in the run-up to the 2016 general election.

Expressing satisfaction about the status of work on the project, the president commended MPH for its work on the project and urged them to continue in the spirit which led them nearly to complete the sea defence wall ahead of schedule.

Breakwater near final stages

A few metres away from the site, President Akufo-Addo also inspected progress with work on construction of the Axim Fishing Port and Landing Site Project, a project that commenced on 22 August 2019.

The project co-ordinator for the contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company, brought the president up to date with overall progress: 80% complete and the area behind breakwater already sufficiently sheltered against the waves.

According to the project co-ordinator, construction of the revetment and breakwater is ongoing and entering its final stage, with construction of this aspect of the project due to be completed in September 2020.

In addition, reclamation of the site is 30% complete, with fabrication of concrete blocks for the erection of the quay wall due to be completed in November.

With construction of the underwater quay wall also due in January 2021, the project co-coordinator assured President Akufo-Addo that the Axim Fishing Port and Landing Site project will be completed in September 2021.

The Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori-Asiamah, added that nine buildings will be erected at the site. They include an administration building, a fish market, a net mending hall, an ice making plant, a workshop, a large fuel depot, a daycare centre, lavatories and a power station.
