Akufo-Addo thanks Ghanaians: I’m extremely grateful
President Akufo-Addo says he is humbled by the show of confidence and support from all Ghanaians through the period leading to his victory on 7 December elections
President Akufo-Addo says the victory today (9 December) would urge him to work very hard to build a prosperous and progressive Ghana.
Addressing the nation after the final declaration by the EC chairperson, he said: “There could be the tendency for an incumbent president who has just secured a second term in office to as it were take it easy and relax because there is nothing more to lose or prove. I am of a different character”
He added: “Just as I have been since January 2017, I give you my word that I will work very hard to build a prosperous and progressive Ghana for which we yearn” adding “I assure you fellow Ghanaians that I would do my best not to let you down”
Akufo-Addo said “the period for campaigning is over and the outcome of the election has been decided. The Ghanaian people through the results have made it loud and clear that the two parties, the NPP and the NDC must work together especially in Parliament for the good of the country.”
Congratulatory messages
He said: “Prior to this declaration by the EC chairperson, I received personal congratulatory messages from some of my fellow presidential candidates in the 7 December election.
“We were confident at the beginning of our campaign that the considerable amount of work that we have done since coming into office in 2017 would secure for us four for years in office. And the declaration made by the Returning Officer has set us on that path,” Akufo-Addo added.
Akufo-Addo won by 51.59% of the total votes cast as against Mahama’s 6,214,889 representing 47.36%. Akufo-Addo polled a total of 6,730,413 votes out of the total 13,434,574.
Crowds of jubilant supporters have hit the streets of Accra and other parts of the country to celebrate the victory of the 76-year-old New Patriotic Party (NPP) leader.
Akufo-Addo first defeated John Mahama by securing 53.8% of the votes cast to his rival’s 44.4% in the 2016 election.
