Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in federal court, challenging the government’s decision to revoke its ability to enroll international students. The university argues that this action is unconstitutional and politically motivated, asserting that it violates the First Amendment and will have an immediate and devastating effect on over 7,000 visa holders, who constitute nearly a quarter of Harvard’s student body.
The Department of Homeland Security, under Secretary Kristi Noem, terminated Harvard’s certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which allows institutions to sponsor international students for visas. Noem accused Harvard of fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party, claims that the university has strongly denied.
Harvard’s lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order to prevent the enforcement of the ban, emphasizing the significant contributions of international students to the university’s mission and the broader academic community.
The Chinese government has criticized the U.S. action, warning that it could damage America’s global reputation and calling the move a politicization of educational exchanges.
This legal battle underscores the escalating tensions between the Trump administration and higher education institutions over immigration policies and academic freedom.
