Haruna Iddrisu vows model STEM schools for every region

Education minister-designate outlines ambitious vision to prepare Ghana’s youth for the future of work with cutting-edge STEM schools

The minister-designate for education, Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged the government’s commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by establishing a model STEM school in each of Ghana’s 16 regions.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday (20 January), Iddrisu emphasised the importance of STEM education in preparing the next generation for the demands of the future workforce.

He also acknowledged the foundations laid by the previous administration in promoting STEM initiatives.

“I should note the effort you have done in getting STEM,” Iddrisu said.

“We intend to build at least in every region of Ghana a model STEM school, which will carry from kindergarten to senior high school to produce men for the future of work.”

He further stressed the urgency of training more Ghanaians in science, information and communication technology (ICT), and engineering to drive the nation’s development.

“We appreciate that going into the future we need to train more people in science, information and communication technology and engineering,” he added.

“In that respect, our universities will be expected to relate more to industry without compromising their core academic objective training models.”

The proposed schools are expected to create a pipeline of skilled individuals to address the growing demand for expertise in STEM fields.

By integrating STEM education from the earliest stages of learning through to senior high school, the government aims to nurture a new generation of innovators and problem solvers who can meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

This bold vision, if realised, could place Ghana at the forefront of STEM education in Africa, equipping its youth with the skills to thrive in the 21st-century job market.
