Sunyani: Traders risk eviction over non payment of rent

According to the MCE for Sunyani, John Ansu Kumi, the move is to raise revenue for the assembly since the traders owe rent in excess of GHC 800,000

Traders occupying the Sunyani Municipal Assembly‘s stalls at the Nana Bosoma market in Sunyani have been given a month’s ultimatum to pay their rent or risk eviction.

According to the MCE for Sunyani, John Ansu Kumi, the move is to raise revenue for the assembly since the traders owe in excess of GHC 800,000.

He said the assembly has no option but to eject the 800 affected traders if they fail to comply.

In an interview with Asaase Business, Kumi said traders occupying about 1,774 of the assembly’s stalls at the Nana Bosoma Market have failed to pay the monthly rent charge of GHC 20 despite consistent reminders.

Though many of the traders have rented out the stores to others at a fee of GHC 1,500, the MCE said they are still reluctant to pay the GHC 20 monthly rent accumulating up to more than GHC 800,000 in arrears..

The assembly, according to Ansu Kumi, decided to let the traders pay an amount of GHC 1000 as part of the debt they owe but most of them decided not to comply, compelling the assembly to issue an ultimatum for the traders to pay up within a month or face ejection.

For his part, the secretary of the Nana Bosoma Market Association, Ansu-Gyeabour Agyiri said they are ready to comply with the directive.

“We had an agreement with the assembly that, each of our members would pay GHC 1000 to expand the market. We the leaders of the association are yet to have a meeting with the MCE to see the way forward and also to know the number of our members who paid the GHC 1000,” Ansu-Gyeabour said.
