GWCL begins expansion work on Sunyani Water Project

Speaking to Asaase Business, the Bono regional manager of the GWCL Dr Samuel Ason said the project is expected to be completed within 36 months.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has begun expansion works on the Sunyani Water Project aimed at improving water supply in the municipality.

The project is estimated to cost €133 million.

Speaking to Asaase Business, the Bono regional manager of the GWCL Dr Samuel Ason said the project is expected to be completed within 36 months.

Built in 1962, the Sunyani Water Project is now struggling to meet the six million gallons of water per day demand for the municipality. At the moment, the plant produces 1.5 million gallons of water daily. This creates a huge deficit that presents a great challenge to the over 200, 000 people in the greater Sunyani area.

Ason said the water expansion project would have 130 kilometers of distribution lines and 90 kilometers of transmission main lines.

“The project has begun. Normally, building of new treatment plant involves a lot, there are so many steps into identifying the site, you need to do value for money audit, you need to select a contractor, you need to do environmental impact assessment, you need to do designs of structures before the actual construction begin.

“The project cost 133 million Euros, it involves; the building of new treatment plant, the construction of pipelines 130 kilometers pipelines, thus distribution lines and transmission mains of 90 kilometers, so that’s what it is involved in the project”.

Capacity

He said the project is designed to produce 12.1 million gallons of water a day, adding that it is projected to meet demand in 2040.

“Let me throw more light on the current demand, the current demand for Sunyani is six million gallons of water a day, so you see that if the project is going to produce 12.1 million gallons of water a day, it’s about double of the current demand and this is because demand is designed to meet up to 2040 demand,” Ason said.

In the meantime, the GWCL is drilling 10 boreholes to alleviate the water shortage situation in some parts of Sunyani and its environs.

On completion, the water supply system will serve not only Sunyani municipality but areas in Sunyani West like Chiraa, Adantia, Kobedi and Odumase.
