The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), in partnership with Tribe Culture Fest, has launched a nationwide initiative dubbed “16×16” to expand access to the FIFA World Cup 2026 experience across all regions of Ghana.
The project, unveiled at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, 27 March, will see the establishment of free public viewing centres in all 16 regions, enabling Ghanaians to watch matches live within their communities.
The launch coincided with the official unveiling of the Tribe Culture Fest, a platform designed to promote Ghanaian culture through sports, arts and tourism.
Speaking at the event, the CEO of the GTA said the initiative is intended to ensure inclusivity, particularly for citizens who may not have the means to travel abroad for the tournament.
“It is not every Ghanaian who can travel to watch the World Cup. We are bringing the experience to every region so that no one is left out,” she said.
She added that the programme will go beyond football by incorporating tourism promotion and community engagement.
“When we come to your region, it will not only be about football. We will also engage communities to showcase their tourism potential,” she noted.
The CEO of Tribe Culture Fest, Nana Kwesi Gyimah, said the initiative will integrate cultural exhibitions with football viewing activities across the country.
“This is about bringing the World Cup to every Ghanaian. Beyond the matches, there will be food, fashion, music and arts,” he said.
Gyimah said the project will also create opportunities for local businesses and creatives, while reducing the need for travel to major cities during the tournament.
“There will be no need to travel to Accra to experience the World Cup. The experience is coming to your region, creating opportunities for people to benefit economically,” he added.
According to organisers, the initiative is expected to promote domestic tourism and deepen national unity by creating shared experiences during the tournament.
They also expressed optimism that the project will increase awareness of tourist destinations across the country, particularly among the diaspora.
As part of activities marking the launch, a live viewing event is scheduled at the Accra Sports Stadium, where fans will watch Ghana’s match against Austria.
The event will also feature musical performances, including an appearance by Olivetheboy.
The “16×16” project is expected to run throughout the World Cup period, with activations planned in all regions.
