GTA backs Ghanaian singer to break Guinness World Record
Afua Asantewaa Aduonum will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual from 24 to 27 December in Accra
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has offered to provide a new venue and logistics to host the Ghanaian singer and entrepreneur seeking to break the Guinness World Record.
Afua Asantewaa Aduonum will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon by an individual from 24 to 27 December in Accra.
The record is currently held by Sunil Waghmare of India. He achieved the feat in Nagpur from 3 to 7 March 2012, featuring a diverse selection of popular Indian songs with no repetition within four hours. The marathon concluded on the evening of 7 March, with Waghmare engaging in a sing-along session with his supporters.
To break Waghmare’s record, Aduonum aims to sing for more than 117 hours in a continuous marathon. Per the regulations, Aduonum must avoid repeating songs, and each rendition must fall within a two-minute mark. To meet this criteria, she is set to perform over 3,200 Ghanaian songs to successfully break the record.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (12 December), Aduonum said the event will now be hosted at the Akwaaba Village, adding that all the necessary measures have been put in place to break the existing record.
She said, “So we officially announced that we are doing this at the Aviation Social Centre but the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) CEO got involved and officially informed us that they are taking over.”
“They want to change the venue, logistics and everything, aside from, they are developing an Akwaaba Village at the airport. They have had a meeting with [aviation authorities] to have a common ground agreement to move the venue to the Akwaaba Village to be able to accommodate a lot of people.”
“… So the GTA is set to make an official announcement that they are taking over [the event], they accepted to do it this morning,” Aduonam said.
