The chief executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwasi Agyeman, says the government is poised to revive domestic tourism with a massive campaign coming up in May

  • "So, we have set ourselves some targets, we are going to relaunch our domestic tourism campaign. In 2017 we started the 'See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Show Ghana' campaign. It's coming back and this time in a bigger way."

Akwasi Agyeman, the chief executive officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), says the government is poised to revive domestic tourism across the country.

Speaking to The Asaase Breakfast Show, Agyeman said the government would launch a domestic tourism drive in May to rally support for the campaign.

“We have set ourselves some targets. We are going to relaunch our domestic tourism campaign. In 2017 we started the ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Wear Ghana and Show Ghana’ campaign. It’s coming back and this time in a bigger way,” Agyeman said.

“We have engaged more people and more people are interested in what we are doing now,” he said. “If you go to Ada, for example, we have declared a tourism enclave. We are working with investors. In Akosombo, we have seen more facilities coming up …

“We believe that we will get it right but first the structure has to be put right, and I believe that is what we have done.”

Satellite venture

The GTA boss explained that the Authority is in the process of finalising rules and regulations governing the operation and management of tourism attractions, setting out health and safety obligations, and categorising the attractions to enable better oversight.

He also revealed plans by the government to roll out a satellite venture to track patronage by Ghanaians of tourism attractions across the country.

“We are working on a tourism sector account that will be able to track activities by indigenes across tourist sites and I believe we will get it right.”

Renewed resolve

He said all stakeholders who play an important role in the domestic tourism sector have resolved to help drive the yet-to-be relaunched campaign to boost tourism within Ghana by Ghanaians.

“Last week we had a big stakeholder meeting with all tour operators, car rental companies, the Hotel Association – everybody was there,” Agyeman told The Asaase Breakfast Show. “And we said the new thing for us was domestic tourism.

“Even if the borders are opened and everything is done, we need to improve upon domestic tourism. And everybody is committed to that.”
