The stereotype attached to my profession is very high, says DegreeBarber

DegreeBarber says he intends to continue barbering because he wants to lift the face of barbering in Ghana and prove naysayers wrong

Ghanaian entrepreneur, Gideon Kofi Tetteh, professionally known as DegreeBarber, has noted that although there are a lot of stereotypes that come with being a barber in Ghana, he is happy to inspire others with his story.

Speaking on the Between Hours show on Tuesday (April 25) the CEO of Reflect Ghana said: “Barbering hair wasn’t something I wanted to do; I started in secondary school due to financial constraints.”

“The stereotype is one of the motivations why I keep holding on to what I’m doing. While I was in school, it was very hard to mingle,” he told the host Naa Ashorkor.

“The stereotype was too high; you know how students behave and how they mock you, but I believe that there’s grace in disgrace.”

“Currently, I have a lot of people saying they are inspired by me, and it’s an honour to have an impact on this many people. I started this work with only me, but now I have 12 people I pay at the end of the month.”

He explained that education has played a pivotal role in his chosen profession.

“I am able to do this because of my knowledge from school. I wonder how one is going to manage a business and sustain it.”

“Without education, I don’t think I would have been able to get to where I am now, talking to the Naa Ashorkor and telling my story to the world,” he added.

According to him, “The one thing complementing the degree barber is school. It is obvious there are no jobs in the country, but that doesn’t mean we should give up, and I’m happy training others to be good barbers.”

“I just love my work and all that comes with it; I can work for 12 hours and not feel tired, “ he said.
