Dr Addai to Ghanaians: There is no herbal cure for breast cancer

Ghana's leading breast surgeon, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, is warning there is no herbal medicine for treating breast cancer or related cancers

  • “No herbs has been shown to cure breast cancer and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has also said that they haven’t given any body the licence to use their herbal preparation to treat cancer and for that matter any of the cancers and non-communicable diseases."

Dr Beatrice Addai, founder and chief executive officer of the Peace and Love Hospitals has warned against the use of herbal interventions to cure breast cancer and other cancer related diseases.

Speaking with Nana Yaa Mensah on Sunday Night, Dr Addai said the use of unauthorised herbal medicines is one of the major factors why most breast cancer patients seek medical attention at late stage of the disease.

“No herbs has been shown to cure breast cancer and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has also said that they haven’t given any body the licence to use their herbal preparation to treat cancer and for that matter any of the cancers and non-communicable diseases,” She said.

Dr Addai added: “But what do we see, what do we hear on the airwaves, they are always there advertising a cure for breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostrate cancer and so on. So, all those activities tend to delay the time the woman will go to the hospital.”

Dr Addai, Ghana’s premier breast surgeon and breast cancer consultant, said statistics reveal that about 70% of breast cancer patients do not seek medical attention early enough.

She said her outfit has over the years been embarking on educational campaign to help sensitise Ghanaians to seek early medical intervention for breast cancer.

Early medical attention

Dr Addai also attributed the absence of pain in the lump during the early stages of breast cancer as one of the reasons why most people do not seek medical attention on time.

“The problem we have with our women about breast cancer is the fact that a lot of women do not experience pain when they have lumps in the breast, or even when they have some abnormality there is no pain.

“And once there is no pains people think there is no danger and so they go about their normal duties, they don’t have pains so they don’t think of going to the hospital, but when it gets too big or it has spread elsewhere that is when they rush to the hospital… some of them end up in the prayer camps,” Dr Addai said.
