Public transport fares in Ghana are set to be reduced by 15% from Saturday (25 May 2025), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has confirmed.
The move follows negotiations between the union and the Ministry of Transport, amid growing pressure on operators to adjust fares in line with recent economic changes.
The GPRTU cited the strengthening of the cedi against the US dollar and a steady fall in fuel prices as key reasons behind the decision. Fuel is one of the major cost components in the country’s transport sector.
In recent weeks, fuel prices have declined consistently, sparking calls from commuters and civil society groups for a reduction in transport charges.
The Ministry of Transport has welcomed the announcement, describing it as a step in the right direction.
Passengers, already burdened by high living costs, have largely welcomed the news. Some say it offers a glimmer of relief and hope that other essential goods and services may also see price drops in the coming weeks.
The revised fares will cover all commercial transport services regulated by the GPRTU including intra-city minibuses (trotros), long-distance buses, and commercial taxis.
