Inflation rate for April 2021 drops to 8.5%

This is the first time this year that the country has recorded single-digit inflation amid the COVID-19 pandemic

The year-on-year inflation rate for April 2021 was 8.5%, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has said.

This means inflation rate has reduced by 1.8 percentage points compared to the month of March 2021.

The year-on-year inflation rate for March 2021 was 10.3%. 

Month-on-month inflation between March and April 2021 was 1.5% which was 0.6 percentage points higher than what was recorded in March. 

Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, Government Statistician said transport and insurance, as well as financial services, recorded inflation rates above the national average of 8.5%.

Transport (9.6%), insurance and financial services (9%) recorded inflation rates above the national average of 8.5%.

The inflation rate for imported goods was 7.4%, up from 6.8% recorded in March 2021, while the inflation for locally produced items was 8.7%, down from the 11.7% recorded in March 2021.

According to the GSS figures, food inflation rate stood at 6.5%, lower than the 10.8% recorded in March 2021. 

The non-food inflation rate went up to 10.2% in April 2021, from 10.0% recorded in March 2021.

The non-food inflation, housing, water, electricity and gas recorded an inflation rate of 25%, down from 29% recorded in March 2021. 

Regional breakdown

The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest inflation rate of 12.1% in April this year, but lower than that of March 2021 (11.5%).

The Ashanti Region also recorded an inflation rate of 10.1%, higher than the national average.

However, the Upper West Region recorded the lowest inflation rate of 2%.
