Government to crack down on project delays in MMDAs, says Adjei-Mensah Korsah

The Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has announced stringent measures against contractors delaying projects in metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs).

Addressing assembly staff, members of assemblies and the media during a tour of Asokwa municipality last month, the minister emphasised the need to change local attitudes towards project delays.

“I have suggested to the government that it terminates the contracts of persons who delay projects beyond timelines contrary to what it agreed upon between the MMDAs, so that it serves a lesson, because this attitude retards progress and the development of the country,” the minister said.

Commending Asokwa Municipal Assembly for its exemplary performance under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCSP), which is funded by the World Bank, Adjei-Mensah Korsah highlighted Asokwa’s proactive stance in implementing phases four and five of the programme.

“In the Ashanti Region, Asokwa stands out as the only municipal assembly to have commenced phases four and five of the GSCSP projects, which is highly commendable,” the minister said.

Set the standard

Adjei-Mensah Korsah inspected several project sites during his tour, including banking halls and offices being built for rental on the premises of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly, the Ahinsan-Ahinsan Estate Road, the Tonpeg-Gyinyase road and the Chirapatre market road.

The municipal chief executive for Asokwa, Akwannuasah Gyimah, expressed gratitude to the minister for his visit, highlighting its significance in assessing project implementation and motivating the assembly staff to maintain high standards.

He also stressed the importance of the minister’s oversight in ensuring accountability and progress in the municipality.

“We appreciate the minister’s visit, which not only evaluates our ongoing projects but also motivates us to maintain our pace of development under the GSCSP,” said the MCE.
