Government spends about GHC1.8 million on destruction of gantries on Accra-Tema Motorway

The Department of Urban Roads has expressed worry over the spate of destruction of gantries on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

A gantry is a bridge-like overhead structure with a platform supporting equipment such as a crane, signals, or cameras.

The Department of Urban Roads has so far replaced six of such gantries on the Accra- Tema Motorway at a cost of about GHC300,000 each.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show Tuesday (4 June) Ing. Kofi Nti Appiagyei, development engineer at the Department of Urban Roads, said his outfit will hold a stakeholder engagement to sensitise cargo truck drivers on the issue.

“We are trying to have a stakeholder engagement with the cargo trucks. Because we’ve realised that they are the most serious offenders when it comes to this damage to these gantries. So we are having a meeting with them, I think, in this June,” he said.

“And the frequency, the rate at which these things [are destroyed] are quite worrying and even the time it takes for you to be able to restore them is a problem for us. So we are appealing to the public, especially encouraged to volunteer information about persons who cause actions or damage to these gantries for handsome reward.”

He added “Yes. It depends on the design and the specification. What kind of material that you’re using. But one gantry, I mean, normal standard gantry that we’ve done. It cost us about between GHC250,000 to GHC300,000 Ghana cities, including installation.”
