The government on Thursday (28 July) announced that it has released GHC57 million to cater for the feeding and running of colleges of education in 46 institutions in the country.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Education said it is committed to sufficiently resource all institutions under its ambit to promote quality education.

Food shortages in senior high schools are being resolved

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Yaw Osei Adutwum, has said that most state-owned senior high schools have received food items after weeks of shortage in the system.

Responding to questions in Parliament, he confirmed that the government owes the National Food Buffer Stock Company roughly GHC340 million, resulting in a shortage of food items in some high schools in Ghana.

However, speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (27 July 2022), Dr Adutwum said the government is working towards clearing the debt and ending the shortages.

“Yesterday, I had a zoom conference call with the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), regional directors of [the Ghana Education Service] and TVET Service – and every region confirmed that items have come in or are coming in,” he said.

“Buffer Stock is readying itself to begin to reinvent their supply chain system to make sure that the supplies are regular.

“They did procurement at the local level, and from Upper West to Upper East all the way to Ashanti and Greater Accra, they all said they are getting the items that they need.

“I am sure if you call them they will tell you: the items that are in short supply are now coming. So that is a cashflow, supply chain system [problem] and it is not about the budget,” Dr Adutwum said.
