Free SHS: Beneficiaries must support schools, says Anis Haffar

The educationist says parents can bear the cost of maintenance fees of the schools of their wards among others

Anis Haffar, the founder of GATE Institute wants parents whose children are benefitting from the Free SHS education programme to support their schools.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Sunday Night show with Nana Yaa Mensah, the educationist said parents through the Parent-Teacher Associations can bear the cost of maintenance fees of the schools of their wards among others.

“It is in our interest as citizens to make sure that every school in this country succeeds, especially if it is the schools where your children are, you are not paying fees now…” Haffar said.

He added: “We have the PTA and the board of governors, they have to rise to the occasion and say that now that you are getting your children to go to school for free, what is it that you are going to do to help that particular school.”

All hands on board

Haffar noted that all stakeholders must play their part to support the government in transforming the educational system.

“… All hands need to be on deck, no government can do everything for everybody… you know and then people tell you they don’t have money, but you will be surprised the kinds of things they use the money for,” he said.

Haffar also called on Ghanaians to change their attitudes when it comes to investing in education.

“This bleaching creams, do you know how much they cost, these wigs, do you know how much they cost, and the amount of money we use on alcohol, do you know how much it costs, but it will never  go to where the children are, that is the part of the culture that has to change,” Haffar said.
