Government honours helicopter crash victims with promotions, education and welfare fund for their children

President John Mahama has announced posthumous promotions for three Ghana Armed Forces officers who died in the 6 August 2025 military helicopter crash, alongside the creation of a dedicated support fund for the children of all eight victims.

Addressing mourners at the state funeral in Accra on Friday, the President said the promotions were “the highest mark of respect for duty performed even unto death.”

Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala has been elevated to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Mensah Addo to Flight Sergeant.

“These are not just symbolic gestures. They represent the rightful place these officers have earned in our Republic’s roll of honour,” he said, adding that the benefits due to their families would reflect the new ranks.

The President also announced that civilian victims will be recognised at the next National Honours Ceremony.

To safeguard the future of the victims’ children, the government has established the Children’s Support Fund for the Children of the Victims of the 6th August Helicopter Crash, which will cover education, health care, and essential living expenses until tertiary or technical completion.

Citing Ghana’s tradition of collective responsibility, the President called on citizens, businesses, professional associations and international partners to contribute.

Standard Bank has already opened an account with an initial GHC 500,000, while the government will make an immediate seed contribution and publish the fund’s framework within 30 days.

Quoting the late Defence Minister Dr Omane Boamah’s poem to a young boy he helped, the President said, “You’re not alone. You’ve got me. Always there to share.”
