Government has not neglected Keta tidal surge victims, says Letsa

The Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa, says the government has been providing relief items to the victims of the tidal wave

The government says that since barely two days after the inundation, it has been providing support for victims of the tidal waves which flooded Keta and its environs on Saturday 6 November 2021.

The Volta Regional Minister, Archibald Yao Letsa, said that contrary to speculation that it had abandoned the victims, the government has been supporting the victims with relief items through the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC).

The riposte from the Regional Minister follows claims by the MP for Ketu South, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, and other leading members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the government has abandoned people living around Keta who have been affected by the flooding.

Dr Letsa said the claims are unfortunate because the government has taken many steps to alleviate the displaced people’s plight.

“We have been in contact with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) ever since the tidal waves hit,” Letsa told reporters.

“In the week that it struck, we got some relief items from them, and these relief items were dispatched to the area. These include mattresses, blankets, mosquito nets, mats, rice, maize, cooking oil and detergents.

“When the items arrived, I gave instructions that they should be sent to Keta and distributed to the three affected assemblies: Ketu South, Keta and Anloga,” the minister said.

Letsa empathised with the people of Keta, and said a long-term solution was also being pursued by the government to end the perennial disaster.

He said the second phase of the Keta sea defence wall project is in the offing and that work will start in due time.

Dr Letsa also gave his assurance that the government will not neglect the victims of the tidal wave and will do everything it can to offer support in every possible way.
