Yam festival: Asogli state imposes ban on funerals

The festival serves to strengthen bonds between families and friends, thank God and the gods of the land for a fruitful year of yam harvest, raise funds for community-based developmental projects and educational scholarships

The Asogli traditional council in the Volta Region has issued a ban on funerals in the Asogli traditional area beginning 14 August to 8 October in preparation for the Yam festival.

The ban precedes the celebration of Te za (Yam festival) and the 20th anniversary Togbe Afede XIV as Agbogbomefia (paramount chief) of the Asogli state.

Stephen Tetteh, secretary of the Asogli state, in a statement issued on 23 June stressed the need for the ban, urging residents to observe the directive.

The statement said, “The Asogli traditional council announces for information of the general public that it has commenced preparations for this year’s Te za (Yam festival) and 20th anniversary celebration of His Royal Majesty Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli state….

“The Asogli State Council, therefore announces that the customary ban on funerals in the entire Asogli state will take effect from Monday 14 August and end on Sunday 8 October.”

The paramount chief, his chiefs and queens however “…appeal to the general public to cooperate with them by strictly observing the ban on funerals to ensure a peaceful and successful celebration.”

Te za is an annual festival celebrated by the chiefs and people of Asogli traditional area in September. Other traditional areas in the Volta Region such as Awudome, Tanyigbe and Shia also celebrate the Yam festival.

The festival serves to strengthen bonds between families and friends, thank God and the gods of the land for a fruitful year of yam harvest, raise funds for community-based developmental projects and educational scholarships.
