President John Dramani Mahama says the government is considering a proposal to use the Ho Airport as a first-class pilot training school for West Africa.
This, the President said, would enable young people interested in training as pilots to go and train at the Ho Airport.
“That will help us to utilise the airport more and so we’re going to work on that so that we can operationalise it as quickly as possible,” he stated.
President made this known on Wednesday, 22 January, when he received a delegation of pastors from the Volta Region at the Flagstaff House in Accra, led by Rev Seth K. Mawutor, Chairman, Volta Regional branch of the Christian Council of Ghana, and Chairman, Ecumenical Council of Churches, Volta Region.
The delegation was at the seat of government to congratulate the president on his decisive victory in the 7 December general election.
He said the Ho Airport was built during his previous administration with a lot of expectations that it would become a major commercial route for the nation’s domestic airlines.
“And indeed, one of the airlines started, that is Passion and unfortunately the traffic did not build up as quickly as they had expected, so they had to hold back and re-appraise their strategy for the region,” President Mahama said.
He said he tried to find out why the airline decided to withdraw its Ho services and noted that his findings indicated that Passion Air at that time was using two aircraft for the Ho route—a 70-passenger capacity and a 50-passenger capacity.
“And so, my advice to them was to start with a smaller aircraft and as the route develops, you can bring in the larger aircraft,” he said
“So, I think they’re appraising their strategy and I’m sure once they do that, they might start flights to go again.”
On his part, Rev Seth K. Mawutor, Chairman, Volta Regional Branch of the Christian Council of Ghana, and Chairman, Ecumenical Council of Churches, Volta Region, on behalf of the delegation, congratulated President Mahama on his decisive victory that God had given him in the 7 December general election.
He appealed to the President to ensure the operationalisation of the Ho Airport to facilitate the movement of people, goods and services.
Rev Matthias Mededues-Badohu, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ho, appealed to the President to ensure that roads in the Volta Region were fixed.
