U.S. court finds Google holds illegal monopoly in online Ad Tech
U.S. judge rules Google holds illegal monopolies in online advertising technology, escalating antitrust pressure on the tech gian

A U.S. federal judge has ruled that Google maintains illegal monopolies in key areas of the online advertising technology ecosystem. This decision represents a significant victory for the Department of Justice (DOJ) in its antitrust case against the tech behemoth.
The ruling, delivered on April 17, 2025, accuses Google of unfairly leveraging its dominance across various ad tech platforms to stifle competition and entrench its market power. The DOJ and several states argue that Google’s behavior has hurt advertisers, publishers, and ultimately consumers.
Judge Leonie Brinkema of the Eastern District of Virginia found that Google’s conduct—including forcing clients to use its own ad tools and suppressing rivals—violated U.S. antitrust laws.
“This ruling marks a turning point in reining in big tech monopolies,” said a DOJ spokesperson. “No company is above the law.”
Google has denied wrongdoing and is expected to appeal the decision. A spokesperson stated that the company provides valuable tools that benefit businesses and publishers of all sizes.
The court will now determine potential remedies, which may include forced divestitures of Google’s ad tech assets or other structural changes.
This development intensifies regulatory scrutiny of Google, already facing similar challenges in the EU and other global jurisdictions.
