Google Africa has apologised after it received backlash for a tweet about football in Africa.
The company said the intent was humour “but missed the mark”.
In a recently deleted tweet on Sunday (23 June), the Google in Africa account on X tweeted, “Here’s Africa’s most common game. No it’s not hide-and-seek with lions (although that sounds exciting). It’s football.”

However, the company apologised later the same day after receiving a lot of backlash, tweeting: “We sincerely apologise for our tweet today. Our intent was humour, but we missed the mark and offended many. We will strive to do better.”
