The Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) has presented GH¢12.6 million to the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) as its 50% share of proceeds from the forfeiture of 17 gold bars intercepted by the Commission last year.
The amount, which totals GH¢12,645,862.48, is expected to support NACOC’s operational activities.
Chief Executive Officer of GOLDBOD, Sammy Gyamfi, announced the payment when the Director-General of NACOC, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, and his management team paid a courtesy call on the GOLDBOD leadership.
The engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between both institutions, particularly in border security, intelligence sharing and efforts to combat transnational organised crime.
Gyamfi said the 17 gold bars had successfully gone through the validation and forfeiture process and had officially become property of the State.
He noted that while some suspects linked to the case are currently facing legal proceedings, other accomplices remain at large.
The GOLDBOD CEO said the Board approved the release of the funds to NACOC in recognition of the Commission’s operational needs and its contribution to combating illegal activities.
He commended NACOC for its professionalism and commitment to protecting Ghana’s borders, adding that stronger collaboration between the two institutions would enhance efforts against gold smuggling, narcotics trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
Receiving the cheque, Major General Maxwell Obuba Mantey thanked GOLDBOD for fulfilling its commitment and described the support as a major boost for NACOC.
He said NACOC remains committed to taking action against criminal activities encountered during its operations, regardless of whether they fall directly under its primary mandate.
“NACOC is a transparent institution, and integrity remains our hallmark. Whenever our officers encounter criminal activities, regardless of whether they involve narcotics or other offences, we will act in the interest of the State,” he said.
Major General Mantey disclosed that the operation which led to the interception of the gold bars was highly risky, with one officer narrowly escaping an attack and requiring evacuation to Accra.
He added that NACOC has since made further arrests linked to suspected gold smuggling and illicit currency movements.
The NACOC Director-General called for deeper cooperation with GOLDBOD, particularly in intelligence sharing, border surveillance and coordinated enforcement against organised crime.
He also appealed for support from GOLDBOD for NACOC’s public education campaigns aimed at addressing substance abuse among young people.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Ghana’s economic and national security interests through stronger collaboration.
