Gold prices climbed sharply on Monday, May 19, 2025, as the U.S. dollar weakened and global investors reacted to President Donald Trump’s renewed tariff threats, reigniting trade war concerns. Spot gold rose 0.8% to $3,228.47 per ounce, while U.S. gold futures climbed 1.4% to $3,232.10.
The rebound follows a steep 2% drop last Friday—the worst weekly performance since November. However, a 0.5% drop in the dollar on Monday helped make gold more attractive to investors outside the U.S., spurring demand for the safe-haven asset.
Market volatility was further fueled by Moody’s downgrade of the U.S. credit outlook, citing unsustainable debt levels. Investors seeking stability poured funds into precious metals, with analysts predicting that gold could reach $3,700 per ounce by the end of the year and potentially $4,000 by mid-2026.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the Trump administration will press ahead with reinstating aggressive tariffs on countries that fail to negotiate new trade agreements “in good faith,” further unsettling financial markets.
Silver also gained 0.6% to $32.46 per ounce, while platinum and palladium each rose by 0.6% to $993.90 and $966.43, respectively.
As global economic uncertainty grows, the precious metals market may continue to rise, especially with geopolitical tensions and inflationary pressures still in play.
