I started DJing to promote songs of my friends, says Merqury Quaye

At age 16, Merqury converted his father’s sound system into a virtual radio broadcast system, using a domestic AV sender to transmit radio signals from his room to his friends in his neighbourhood

Popular Ghanaian DJ and record producer, Merqury Quaye, has said he developed interest in disc jockeying to help promote his own songs and that of his friends.

According to him, it was his own small way of pushing the brands of his close associates.

“I started DJing because I realised all my friends around me were doing music,” Quaye said while appearing on the Between Hours show on Asaase 99.5 Accra with Keely-Jade Brewer on Monday (21 August).

“So, I thought to myself, how can these songs be promoted?” Quaye, who is known in the Ghanaian creative arts ecosystem as ‘Ghana’s Finest Hypeman’, said.

According to the founder of Merqury Republic, “That is why I decided to put myself in a position where the music that my friends performed could be promoted.”

He, however, claimed that his brand has the biggest fanbase in Ghana.

“Merqury Quaye has the biggest fanbase when it comes to DJs, when it comes to MCs in Ghana,” he said.
