A new survey of National Democratic Congress (NDC) delegates has put National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia ahead in the race to lead the party into the 2028 general election, while Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has emerged as his closest challenger.
The poll, conducted by Global InfoAnalytics among NDC delegates, found that Asiedu Nketia secured 27% support, followed by Ato Forson with 22%, while Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu polled 6%, former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah 5%, and Vice-President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang 7%. About 30% of delegates said they remained undecided.
The findings suggest the contest remains fluid, with nearly one in three delegates yet to decide on a preferred candidate.
Compared with a similar poll conducted in April, Asiedu Nketia’s support fell by one percentage point, while Ato Forson’s backing increased by one point. Haruna Iddrisu’s support dropped by two percentage points, Julius Debrah lost four points, and the proportion of undecided delegates rose from 23% to 27%.
In a hypothetical head-to-head contest between Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson, the incumbent chairman held a narrow advantage among delegates, polling 34% against Ato Forson’s 33%, with 33% still undecided.
The survey also showed Asiedu Nketia maintaining commanding leads in other one-on-one match-ups. He led Haruna Iddrisu by 45% to 16%, Professor Opoku-Agyemang by 46% to 15%, and Julius Debrah by 45% to 16%, while undecided delegates remained a significant voting bloc in each scenario.
Regionally, Ato Forson recorded the biggest improvement in the Volta and Oti regions, where his support rose from 12% in April to 23% in July, while Asiedu Nketia’s support there fell from 30% to 24%.
In the Akan regions, Ato Forson also improved his standing, increasing from 21% to 25%, while Asiedu Nketia’s support declined from 31% to 27%.
Asiedu Nketia, however, strengthened his position in the northern regions, where his support rose from 26% to 31%, while Haruna Iddrisu’s dropped sharply from 35% to 19%.
