Bono Region: NEDCo lost over GHC211, 000 to metre theft in 2023

According to the management of NEDCo, about 88 metres were reported stolen

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) in the Sunyani area says the company lost over GHC 211, 000 in 2023 as a result of metre theft in the Bono region.

According to the management of NEDCo, about 88 metres were reported stolen.

According to the Sunyani area manager of NEDCo, Eugene Addo-Odoi, the company is collaborating with security agencies to stem the tide.

“Of late, the rate at which people are stealing our metres is growing.”

“It used to be very few [stolen metres], but now it’s going on at a higher rate than expected. The metres are supposed to be in places where both officials and customers can access them and because of that, we don’t encourage the metres to be in obscure places. This exposes the metres to other people who may have an interest in stealing them. We are working with the security forces, and we assure you, we will get the culprits very soon,” Odoi said.

The Sunyani area customer service officer, Zakaria Amiratu revealed that about 88 metres were reported stolen from January to December last year (2023) costing NEDCo over GHC211,000.

“From January to December 2023, we received 88 letters with police extracts from customers whose meters have been stolen and when you take these metres, the authorities of NEDCo spend over GHC211,000 to replace them for the customers.”

“So it’s costing us a lot of money because this amount of money could have been used to procure other materials …” Amiratu said.

According to Amiratu, over 1000 metres are illegally acquired in the Sunyani Municipality.

She urged customers to disregard any call urging them to pay new service fees into any mobile money account number but rather pay directly at their office’s counter.

The increasing rate of stolen metres and cables belonging to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) is becoming alarming.

Recently, the NEDCo complained about the rampant theft of their cables, calling on residents to help curb the menace.
