The Director-General of Ghana Health Service, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, has called on regional, municipal, and district health directors, including PROs to foster a collaborative relationship with journalists.
He emphasised the importance of providing timely and accurate information to support their work, acknowledging that journalists play a vital role in disseminating information to the public.
Professor Akoriyea stressed that withholding information can lead to negative reporting, urging health directors, and Public Relations Officers (PROs) to be proactive in sharing information.
He made these remarks during a meeting with health experts in the North East Region on Thursday (3 April 2025), where they discussed strategies to improve the treatment of cerebral spinal meningitis (CSM) in Ghana.
“If we start to suspect that cholera or something like that, you engage the local media. They are the people to be talking on local radio. So let’s engage them, okay?”
He urged, “leadership, let’s engage the media, provide them with information at the right time, and make them our allies.”
The Director-General is undertaking a tour of the five Northern regions to engage with local health experts.
The aim is to enhance treatment outcomes for cerebral spinal meningitis cases at health facilities, ensuring patients receive optimal care.
