GHS Director-General tours North East Region to boost meningitis awareness
The regional health directorate reported four cases of meningitis this year, all of which were treated and successfully discharged. However, in 2024, the region recorded five cases, all of which resulted in fatalities due to delays in seeking hospital treatment

Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has embarked on a meningitis awareness tour across the five northern regions of Ghana.
The initiative aims to encourage health workers to step up efforts in raising awareness about meningitis in these regions.
Professor Akoriyea’s first stop was Tamale in the Northern Region, where he met with health experts before proceeding to Walewale in the North East Region.
The regional health directorate reported four cases of meningitis this year, all of which were treated and successfully discharged. However, in 2024, the region recorded five cases, all of which resulted in fatalities due to delays in seeking hospital treatment.
During his visit on Thursday (3 April 2025), Professor Akoriyea provided the region with medication to support the ongoing fight against meningitis across the various districts. He also toured the Walewale Government Hospital, encouraging nurses to continue offering compassionate and empathetic care to patients.
In his address, the Director-General emphasised the importance of maintaining vigilance, stating, “We are here to continue raising awareness about meningitis and to visit the health workforce, encouraging them to keep delivering their best.”
Professor Akoriyea commended the North East Region’s health workforce for their impressive handling of meningitis cases, noting that this year, the region managed four confirmed cases without any fatalities, a significant improvement from the previous year’s five deaths.
“Fortunately, this year, the region has done exceptionally well. Last year, five cases resulted in five deaths, but this year, four cases were successfully managed with no fatalities. This marks significant progress, and we are here to encourage them to continue their hard work,” he said.
The meeting, which was attended by municipal and district directors of the GHS, along with senior staff and the regional director, provided an opportunity for health leaders to engage with Professor Akoriyea and hear his message of continued vigilance and dedication in the fight against meningitis.
