The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two cases of Mpox in the Accra Metropolitan Area of the Greater Accra Region, prompting an immediate public health response aimed at containing the virus and protecting the population.
In a joint press release issued on Thursday (15 May 2025) by the GHS and the Ministry of Health, officials assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further spread. The health authorities stressed that while the situation is being handled with urgency, there is no need for panic.
Contact tracing and heightened surveillance underway
The two confirmed cases triggered an immediate contact tracing exercise to identify individuals who may have been exposed. Surveillance activities have also been intensified in health facilities and communities across the region.
“We are implementing standard containment protocols and monitoring the situation closely,” said Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Acting Director-General of the Ghana Health Service. “The public health system is on high alert and capable of responding effectively.”
Understanding Mpox and preventing infection
Mpox, a viral illness transmitted through close contact with infected persons, animals, or contaminated materials, typically presents with symptoms such as fever, rash, muscle aches, headache, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.
The GHS is urging the public to remain vigilant and observe basic hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms. Suspected cases should be reported immediately to the nearest health facility for prompt investigation.
Government’s assurance to the public
The Ministry of Health and the GHS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing a potential outbreak.
“We have the capacity and expertise to manage this situation and prevent a larger outbreak,” Prof. Akoriyea stated.
Authorities have encouraged the public to rely on verified information from official channels and to comply with preventive guidelines. Further updates will be provided as investigations and monitoring continue.
