NPP flagbearer race: Alan Kyerematen will pull a surprise in November, says Ayikoi Otoo

A member of the Alan Campiagn team Nii Ayikoi Otoo is optimistic his candidate will pull a surprise in the November polls despite the outcome of Saturday's primary

Nii Ayikoi Otoo, a member of the Alan Kyerematen campaign team, has said the outcome of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) special electoral college on Saturday is not a reflection of what will happen in the main contest on 4 November 2023 when over 200,000 delegates will elect the flagbearer.

Certified results declared by the Electoral Commission show that Bawumia won 629 votes, representing 68.15% of the total valid votes across the 17 centres, to top the pack. The MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, came second, polling 132 votes (14.3%), followed by the former trade minister Kyerematen, who had a total of 95 votes (10.29%).

The former agriculture minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto picked the fourth spot, having garnered 36 votes (3.9%), followed by Francis Addai-Nimoh and Boakye Agyarko, who had nine votes each (0.98%), leaving them to contend for the fifth position in a run-off.

Expect a surprise

Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (28 August), Otoo said Kyerematen will pull a surprise in the November polls.

“This prediction was made that it is likely that the Vice President [Bawumia] will get the big chunk of the results for now, looking at the complexion of the delegates, but it will not translate into what will happen when we bring in the huge number of people down there, who really will vote,” he said.

“Can you say that these 900 people represent over 200,000 people, I doubt,” Otoo said. “So, we are confident that the grassroot, where majority of the voters are, when it comes to November, we are going to have a different result.”

Dress rehearsal

However, speaking on the same programme, Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, campaign aide to Bawumia said the outcome of the special delegates’ conference is a dress rehearsal for the November polls.

“Opponents are deliberately refusing to properly examine the outcome of this election,… the attempt to make it look like those who voted are all government appointees and are definitely going to vote for the Vice President clearly did not examine the composition well,” he said.

“Out of these over 900 delegates, only 21 voted because they are appointees of the government, and that is about 2.1%, 98% voted because the NPP constitution grants them the power to vote,” Khomeini said.
