Ghana’s shared 5G infrastructure will lead to 100% penetration by 2030, says Tetteh

The government last week announced its partnership with seven industry players on a new shared infrastructure to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana.

The vice chairman of Parliament’s committee on communications, Sylvester Tetteh has said Ghana’s shared 5G infrastructure will lead to 100% penetration for 5G and 4G by 2030.

The government last week announced its partnership with seven industry players on a new shared infrastructure to deliver affordable 5G mobile broadband services across Ghana.

The seven partners are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, and Tech Mahindra and two telcos – AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.

The partners have established the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which has been awarded a 5G license and is expected to launch 5G services across Ghana within the next six months, followed by expansion to other parts of Africa.

The company will be the first 5G Mobile Broadband Shared Infrastructure Entity to build a nationwide 4G/5G network. It will also work with the telcos to launch affordable 4G/5G-enabled FWA CPEs and smartphones in Ghana within this calendar year.

But the Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the legality of the 5G deal awarded to Next Gen Infraco by the government.

According to the Minority, the transaction was being finalised without the knowledge or approval of Parliament.
However reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (4 June), Tetteh said the benefits that comes with the shared infrastructure is enormous.
“When MTN bought the 4G spectrum, after nine years we had only 15 % in our country, what that does is that it crowds out issue and we don’t get the full benefit of the 4G spectrum for digital inclusion for national access, the cost of data and cost of voice,” he said.
“So what government has done is that instead of going to sell a 5G spectrum to one particular firm , once you buy the spectrum, you decide what you should do with it,… now when you come on the consortium, government is going to have a deal with you concerning your added service and its benefit.”
He added “This particular consortium and the roll out after 6-month, we will have 50% of national penetration, by 2030, we will have 100% of national penetration of 5G and 4G spectrum in Ghana. This will reduce rural urban migration, promote education and create jobs for the tech industry.”
