The future of rugby league shines brightly in the Ashanti Region, says RLFG president

The Ashanti Region hosted its first-ever Junior and Senior High Schools Rugby League 9s tournament on Friday (3 May)

The future of rugby league burns brightly in the Ashanti Region, according to Juliana Storey, president of the Rugby League Federation Ghana (RLFG).

Storey’s comments come after the successful conclusion of the federation’s inaugural Junior and Senior High Schools Rugby League 9s tournament held in Aduman on Friday (3 May).

“In the heart of the Ashanti Region, the future of rugby league shines brightly, driven by the passion of our youth and the unwavering support of our community,” said Storey.

The tournament saw spirited competition between four junior high schools (JHS)—Akrowa JHS, Akrofrom JHS, Mowire JHS, and Apagya JHS—and two senior high schools (SHS)—Aduman SHS and Pentecost SHS.

Despite reaching the finals in both JHS boys and girls categories, Akrowa JHS fell short to Akrofrom JHS (0–8) and Apagya JHS (4–9), respectively, securing second place on each occasion.

The SHS section witnessed dominance from Aduman SHS. They secured a clean sweep, defeating Pentecost SHS 8-4 and 4-0 in the boys and girls categories, respectively, becoming the Ashanti Region’s first-ever champions.

The tournament served as a springboard for talented players like Osei Bemah Angel (Akrowa JHS), Enock Morrison (Apagya JHS), Afriyie Elizabeth (Pentecost SHS), and Agyei Junior (Aduman SHS). Their performances stressed the region’s immense potential.

“With each match, our youth are not only refining their sporting skills but also shaping a path toward social and personal excellence,” said George Asamoah, assistant Ashanti regional manager of the RLFG.

Highlighting the broader vision, Julius Amevor, Ashanti regional manager of the RLFG, emphasised, “Our rugby league agenda goes beyond competition; it’s about inclusivity, accessibility, and community engagement.”
