Ghana’s fastest human left out of relay team for 2024 Paris Olympics
This unexpected development comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Athletics (WA) revised qualification criteria for the athletics programme after exceeding their initial projected athlete numbers

Edwin Gadayi, crowned Ghana’s fastest human in June 2024, has been omitted from the men’s 4x100m relay team for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics.
This unexpected development comes after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Athletics (WA) revised qualification criteria for the athletics programme after exceeding their initial projected athlete numbers.
The revised plan restricts full accreditation for the fifth member of relay teams, classifying them as additional alternates.
This change forced Ghana Athletics (GA) to make a difficult decision, as explained by president Bawa Fuseini.
“It was not our decision to take him out,” Fuseini admitted.
“He was in our first list for the Olympic Games, and we know this will be hard for them. However, we have already spoken to him and he knows he will not be going to the Games.”
This means Benjamin Azamati, Joseph Paul Amoah, Isaac Botsio, and Fuseini Ibrahim will represent Ghana in the 4x100m relay at the Paris Games.
Despite the setback, Gadayi has enjoyed a successful 2024 campaign. He secured gold in the 100m at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Regional Championships, a silver medal in the 4x100m relay at the 13th African Games, and played a role in Ghana’s qualification for Paris at the 2024 World Athletics Relays.
