GMA to government: Extend digital record system to private health facilities

The general secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) Dr Titus Beyuo says the arrangement will greatly enhance health care delivery

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is advocating for extension of government’s electronic medical records system to cover private health facilities in the country.

The government as part of measures to digitalise the country is connecting public health facilities to a digital platform that will make it easier to access patientsā€™ folders.

Speaking to Asaase News on Wednesday (3 November), the deputy general secretary of the GMA, Dr Titus Beyuo said the move will greatly enhance healthcare delivery.

“In terms of what can be done further, I think they need to complete the system. They haven’tĀ  added a lot ofĀ  the district hospitals yet, and they also need to add private hospitals as well, or have a linkage with private hospitals … so that records can be transferred as well,” he said.

“Most of the private hospitals have a system or haveĀ  purchased various systems. The entire government system is using one type of system… so what should be done in the next phase, especially for hospitals in the cities, it is for the ICT systems to be able to speak to communicate to each other at the backend.”

Beyuo added: “The system being rolled out by the government should have the capacity to talk to each other and also with the systems in the private sector, so that if you are referred from say Nyaho Clinic, Lister Hospital, wherever to government hospital, your information should be accessible.”
