Ghana’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2024 score declines to 42
Ghana’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2024 score declines to 42, marking a setback in anti-corruption efforts. Transparency International urges reforms to strengthen governance, oversight, and whistleblower protections.

The 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International reveals a setback in Ghana’s fight against corruption.
The country scored 42 out of 100, marking a drop from 43 in 2023 and ranking 80th out of 180 countries. This decline is the first in five years, reflecting persistent governance challenges despite policy interventions.
In the Sub-Saharan African region, Ghana ranks 11th among 49 countries, trailing behind leaders like Seychelles (72), Botswana (57), and Mauritius (51).
The region continues to struggle with corruption, registering the lowest global average score of 33. However, Tanzania stands out for its progress, attributed to stronger anti-corruption enforcement and a specialised court for economic crimes.
The CPI 2024 also highlights the link between corruption and the climate crisis, showing how corruption weakens environmental policies and endangers activists.
In Ghana, corruption in mining license allocations poses significant threats to natural resources, with recent violent attacks on journalists exposing these risks.
To address these issues, the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) recommends measures including enhanced parliamentary oversight, the establishment of an anti-corruption court, merit-based public service appointments, whistleblower protections, and stricter political party financing laws; crucial for reversing the downward trend and strengthening Ghana’s democratic and economic governance.
