Ghanaians to pay more for utilities starting 3 May
Electricity tariffs are set to rise by an average of 14.75%, while water tariffs will go up by 4.02%

Ghanaians will pay more for electricity and water from 3 May, following an upward adjustment announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The increase forms part of the Commission’s quarterly tariff review for the first half of 2025, aimed at ensuring financial sustainability for utility service providers while cushioning consumers against sharp price hikes.
Electricity tariffs are set to rise by an average of 14.75%, while water tariffs will go up by 4.02%.
In a statement issued on Friday, 11 April, the PURC said the review took into account a number of macroeconomic factors, including the Ghana cedi to US dollar exchange rate, inflation trends, fuel costs—particularly natural gas—and the current hydro-thermal power generation mix.
The Commission also cited a need to recover GHS976 million in outstanding revenue from previous quarters in 2024. Half of this amount is expected to be recovered through the latest tariff adjustment, with the remaining 50% spread across subsequent quarters this year.
The PURC warned that continued under-recovery by utility providers could lead to service disruptions, adding that the adjustments are necessary to prevent further strain on the country’s energy and water supply systems.
“While these upward adjustments may impact consumers, they are critical to maintaining reliable utility services,” the Commission noted.
The new tariffs will be officially gazetted and published on the Commission’s website in the coming days.
