Ghanaians still paying E-Levy in disguise – Deputy minority leader alleges

Deputy minority leader Patricia Appiagyei asserts that despite the official repeal of the E-Levy, Ghanaians continue to bear its financial burden through concealed charges

Deputy Minority Leader of Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei, has raised concerns that Ghanaians are still effectively paying the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) despite its official repeal. She alleges that the government has reintroduced the levy under different guises, leading to continued financial strain on citizens.

Appiagyei contends that the current administration has failed to fully eliminate the E-Levy, as promised, and instead, has implemented alternative charges that mirror the effects of the original levy. She emphasizes that this approach undermines public trust and calls for greater transparency in the government’s fiscal policies.

The E-Levy, initially introduced in May 2022, was a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions, including mobile money transfers and online payments. It faced significant public opposition and was a central issue in the 2024 elections. Following the elections, the new administration announced the repeal of the E-Levy in April 2025.

However, Appiagyei’s allegations suggest that the financial burden intended to be alleviated by the repeal persists, albeit through different mechanisms. She urges the government to honor its commitment to abolish the levy in all forms and to provide clear communication regarding any new charges imposed on electronic transactions.
