The Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, has rejected claims that New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong lacks the qualities required to lead the country, describing such arguments as deceptive and intellectually dishonest.
Speaking on The Big Bulletin on Monday, (12 January), Amoah said criticisms of Agyapong’s suitability as a presidential candidate ignore what he described as a strong record of social intervention, job creation, and personal sacrifice for national causes.
“It is not just coincidence. There is a lot of impact and input into national and social issues,” Amoah said, pointing to Mr Agyapong’s philanthropic activities, including investments running into millions of dollars to establish a cardiothoracic centre and his support for stranded Ghanaians abroad.
He further argued that among the leading contenders in the NPP race, Agyapong has the strongest employment record, both within and outside government, insisting that this resonates with ordinary Ghanaians who are demanding tangible leadership.
“When it comes to employment record, even beyond politicians in the NPP, he has the best record in terms of jobs catered for Ghanaians,” he said.
Addressing concerns about Agyapong’s confrontational style and resurfaced videos critics say undermine his presidential prospects, Amoah dismissed the claims as misrepresentations.
“Most of the videos you see are twisted use of information,” he said, adding that boldness and confrontation are sometimes necessary to address corruption and social misconduct.
“Ghanaians are looking for someone who can give them jobs, someone who is ready when people are in trouble. Some of his confrontational tendencies are needed in times such as this,” he argued.
Amoah said many Ghanaians view Agyapong as bold, truthful, confident, and sincere, qualities he believes are critical to tackling corruption and restoring discipline in public life.
He went further to frame Agyapong’s political rise in spiritual terms, claiming the candidate enjoys divine favour.
“Kennedy has been chosen by God,” he said, drawing parallels with biblical figures such as Moses, David, and Peter, whom he noted were imperfect but still chosen for leadership.
On internal party tensions ahead of the 31 January NPP presidential primaries, the Nhyiaeso MP acknowledged concerns about division within the party and called for a structured approach to unity.
He proposed the introduction of a code of conduct to manage relations among camps before, during, and after the primaries, stressing the need to bring all stakeholders on board once a flagbearer emerges.
“We need unity. Once we win, we are all coming together. We must put mechanisms in place early to manage tensions and ensure people give their best,” he said.
Amoah expressed confidence that the party would overcome its internal challenges and regroup ahead of the 2028 general election, adding that a strong and united opposition remains essential for Ghana’s democratic progress.
He was speaking as a leading member of the Kennedy Agyapong campaign, reacting to a recent Sanity Africa poll that predicts a win for the Assin Central MP in the NPP’s upcoming presidential primary scheduled for 31 January.
