Ghanaians face cost-of-living pressure despite utility reductions, says Kofi Kapito

PURC

Kofi Kapito, CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency, has warned that the recent reductions in electricity (4.8%) and water (3.06%) tariffs are largely symbolic in the face of rising fuel costs and transport fares.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (17 March), he said, “We give with one hand and take with the other,” noting that preemptive petrol price hikes by oil marketing companies further erode any relief for consumers.

Kapito criticised the lack of strict enforcement by regulators, describing the system as weak and allowing market actors to exploit consumers.

He highlighted that many Ghanaians are unaware of their consumer rights, which limits their ability to demand fair treatment and better services.

He also called for more government intervention in public transport, suggesting that expanding services like MetroMass buses could regulate fares and cushion citizens from escalating costs of food and daily necessities.
