Ghana Water Limited began commercial production of bottled water in 2018

In 2018, Ghana Water Limited modified its objectives to include packaged water, which paved the way for GWL, to incorporate G-Water Limited

Ghana Water Limited (GWL), the sole government-owned water utility company responsible for the production, transmission, and distribution of water in urban areas in Ghana, contrary to claims that it is about to venture into bottled water production, started the same in 2018 during the Akufo-Addo administration.

In 2018, Ghana Water Limited modified its objectives to include packaged water, which paved the way for GWL, a Public Limited Liability Company (PLC), to incorporate G-Water Limited as a subsidiary of GWL. GWL also has a board of directors and a chief executive officer (CEO) overseeing its operations.

Bottled water production

Asaase News checked with the former managing director (MD) of GWL, Mr Clifford Braimah, who revealed that G-Water began commercial production in 2018, producing 3,000 bottles per hour at their Kpong facility. The former GWL MD further indicated that when he was leaving office, G-Water doubled its production to 6,000 bottles per hour, and there were plans to increase it to 12,000 bottles per hour.

He further explained that the Management of the then Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) deliberated on producing bottled water following its reorganization, the merging of GWCL and the Ghana Urban Water Limited (GUWL), in 2013.

Mr Braimah said that the Special Business Unit (SBU) was established and charged, among other things, with helping set up a water bottling plant. In 2015, the Business Development Unit (BDU) replaced the SBU to develop GWL’s water packaging business.

“After the necessary tender processes, Messrs. Blessedfields Limited was awarded the contract to construct the water bottling plant, which began in November 2017. Commercial production and sales started in December 2018.

“I find it misleading to hear the current managing director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, claim that GWL is about moving into producing bottled water,” the former GWL managing director told Asaase.

“That started in 2018, so, at best, we should hear him say he is ready to implement the plan he inherited to boost production from 6,000 per hour to 12,000,” the former GWL managing director further disclosed to Asaase.

The GWL

As of June 2024, GWL manages and operates eighty-four (84) water systems, comprising sixty-one (61) surface water systems and twenty-three (23) groundwater systems. These systems serve about 14 million people nationwide. The company operates in 15 regional offices and 103 district offices.

Additionally, GWL’s average production is 950,995 m3/day (209 million gallons/day), with a demand of 1,129,361 m3/day (248 million gallons/day). Our urban access is 84.2%, serving 1,008,301 customers, of which 89% are metered. The total staff strength is 5,755.
