‘Pragya ban’: 12 anti-KMA ‘rioters’ granted GHC30,000 bail each

The ruling came after the case was moved from a district court when the suspects made their second appearance on Tuesday (15 August)

The 12 suspects who were detained over a recent disturbance at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have been granted a GHC 30,000 bail each, by a circuit court at Akropong in the Ashanti Region.

The court, as part of the bail conditions, ordered the accused persons to produce two sureties, one of them being a religious leader. It further ordered them to report to the Regional CID Headquarters this and every Tuesday.

The ruling came after the case was moved from a district court when the suspects made their second appearance on Tuesday (15 August).

The accused persons were arrested, charged and arraigned after some tricycle riders went on a rampage at the KMA premises on Monday (7 August), demanding the release of their impounded machines. The violent protest led to the injury of at least six policemen and vehicles vandalized.

The case has been adjourned to 8 September, 2023.

The KMA in its quest to re-organize the Central Business District (CBD) imposed a ban on the movement of tricycles at the trading hub. The move has been opposed by these tricycle riders who fear their livelihoods would be affected.

But city authorities have been justifying this move and are seeking the intervention of parliament to regulate their activities.

“It is our wish that parliament legislate so that probably they would be properly regulated or totally banned from operating in commercial areas”, said Randy Wilson, Head of the Transport Department at the KMA.
