The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced a US$3.4 billion renewable energy investment aimed at overhauling Ghana’s power sector and boosting the country’s role in Africa’s green energy transition.
Speaking at the 3rd Renewable Energy Forum Africa (REFA 2025) in Accra, Jinapor outlined a five-year strategy designed to harness the private sector and unlock the country’s abundant renewable energy potential.
The programme sets ambitious targets, including the addition of 1,400MW of renewable power capacity, the rollout of 400 mini-grids, the installation of over 100 fast-charging stations, and the wider use of solar-powered irrigation to support farming.
Progress is already visible. Ghana now hosts Africa’s largest rooftop solar installation at 16.8MW, and a 200MW solar plant recently commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama is set to expand to 1,000MW by 2032.
Looking beyond Ghana, the Minister stressed the urgent need for Africa to tap into its natural energy resources. “A continent with such abundant solar potential cannot continue to face energy shortages,” he said.
He added that using just a fraction of the available renewable resources could eliminate energy poverty and drive sustainable development across Africa.
The US$3.4 billion plan reflects a broader push to integrate solar energy, mini-grids, and other green technologies into Ghana’s economy, aiming to create jobs, boost industrial growth, and secure long-term energy stability.
