Ghana, U.S. reaffirm strong trade ties following Washington talks

Ghana and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties following high-level discussions in Washington, D.C., the Ghanaian Embassy has said.

Ghana’s Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Emmanuel Smith, met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Lee Greer to discuss a proposed cooperation framework aimed at expanding bilateral trade, boosting export opportunities, and attracting U.S. investment into priority sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

The talks reviewed recent U.S. tariff measures affecting Ghana’s access to the U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), with Ghana stressing the need for tariff flexibility to support industrial growth, value addition, and job creation, particularly in textiles, garments, and cocoa processing.

Officials also highlighted Ghana’s role in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and its potential as a gateway for broader U.S.–Africa commercial engagement.

Both sides agreed to exchange draft frameworks and indicative timelines for establishing a comprehensive trade and investment cooperation agreement.

The discussions were supported by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ghana Tourism Authority, and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority.
