Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) announced on Wednesday that it would soon start licensing qualified applicants for the medicinal and industrial cultivation of cannabis, while recreational use of the drug remains illegal.
In the statement, NACOC said the licensing regime is in line with parliamentary approval obtained to implement the licensing regime of controlled cultivation, processing, and use of cannabis with tetrahydrocannabinol content not above 0.3 percent for medicinal and industrial purposes.
According to NACOC, only qualified applicants who meet the security protocols, product traceability systems, quality assurance standards, and full compliance with applicable laws and regulations shall be granted the license.
The organization urged applicants to deal with NACOC directly through the Cannabis Regulation Department, without going through intermediaries.
“NACOC reiterates that recreational use of cannabis remains illegal in Ghana, and the commission pledges to continue to safeguard public health and safety while supporting lawful innovation and industrial development in Ghana,” the statement added.
