The Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has commended Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd on its second anniversary, saying its launch station – Asaase 99.5 Accra – has carved a niche for itself.
“Your credibility over the last two years has been unquestionable and the high standard of work and programming have come to confirm our beliefs about you,” Oppong Nkrumah said. “We can only believe for more and better.”
He said Asaase should strive to maintain the standards it has set for itself and continue to remain relevant in the industry.
“My experience in the industry suggests that in the first two years of an establishment, you are now building your products and product quality standards. But what you guys have done in just two years is pretty impressive.
“Very high-standard production, high-quality programmes. And you are also growing your footprint across the country.
“I think, more importantly, the fact that we can rely on what you say as being true and not laced with any sort of slant or twist bears testimony to the kind of behind-the-scenes work that has already taken place,” the trained broadcaster told Asaase 99.5 Accra’s parliamentary correspondent, Philip Asiawo.
Focus on communities
Oppong Nkrumah said: “I would like to congratulate you on this second anniversary, and challenge you that Ghana is your playing field.
“Don’t just limit your footprint to the about four regions or so that I think you are as of today. But go further and deepen your relationships with the various communities in which you operate, and the sky is your starting ground.”
He also advised Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd against lapsing into opinionated commentary.
“There’s a lot of opinion media that is springing up. [With] the growth of opinionated media following the Fox News model … the risk is that the market may demand a bit more of that as echo chambers, just to reinforce what people think.
“But I believe that the best form of journalism is the one that creates a platform on which all entities can feel comfortable, not echo chambers that reflect one particular view.
“That will be one of the challenges that you will face, and you have to find a way to overcome that challenge by consistently delivering high-quality programming so that your audiences stay with you despite the growing appetite for opinionated media,” Nkrumah said.
Asaase 98.5 Kumasi also turned one on 14 June 2022 and Asaase 100.3 launched in Cape Coast, with expectations of a fourth Asaase station coming on stream in Tamale later this year.
