Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi denies involvement in $2milion Sky Train scandal

Former GIIF board chair refutes all allegations, insists due process was followed in controversial investment

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has firmly denied any wrongdoing in the controversial $2 million Sky Train project investment case.

In a public statement following the formal charges brought against him, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi maintained that he is innocent of all allegations related to the failed project, which was initially proposed as part of Ghana’s efforts to introduce modern rail transport infrastructure.

Background: The Sky Train Investment

The Sky Train project was touted as a revolutionary urban transport system intended to ease traffic congestion in Ghana’s major cities. As part of preliminary arrangements, the GIIF invested $2 million in feasibility studies and other preparatory works in collaboration with the Africa Investor Group, a private South African entity.

However, years after the investment was made, no tangible construction work or follow-up action has been seen on the ground, leading to growing public scrutiny and legal investigations.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi Speaks Out

Responding to the charges, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi argued that all decisions taken during his tenure as GIIF Board Chair were made transparently, and with board and government approval.

“I am completely innocent of the charges brought against me. Every action we took was in line with laid down procedures, and aimed at advancing Ghana’s development,” he said.

He further stated that the $2 million was not lost due to corruption or misappropriation but was an investment based on feasibility expectations at the time. He emphasized that decisions were made in the national interest and reflected standard investment practice.

Legal Proceedings and Public Reaction

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has opened a formal investigation into the failed Sky Train deal, citing concerns over financial accountability and public trust. Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, along with other former officials associated with the GIIF, is currently facing legal proceedings as part of the inquiry.

Public reactions to the Sky Train saga have been mixed—some calling for stricter scrutiny of public investments, while others view the charges against Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi as premature until the full facts are known.

Call for Fair Process

In his remarks, the former Minister of Education and respected academic appealed to Ghanaians and the media for a fair and measured assessment of the case.

“Let’s allow the law to take its full course. I am ready to cooperate fully and prove that there was no wrongdoing on my part,” he said.

The outcome of this high-profile case is expected to have broader implications for the governance of public investment funds and the due diligence practices of infrastructure projects in Ghana.
