Ghana set to implement comprehensive national data policy

The move will make Ghana only the second country in Africa to implement a comprehensive national data policy

Ghana is set to become the second African country to implement a comprehensive national data policy.

The Data Protection Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation and other partners, is working towards establishing this policy in alignment with Ghana’s long-term national development plan and medium-term policy framework.

This development follows Ghana’s successful bid to develop the continental data governance blueprint, as recommended by the African Union Continental Data Policy Framework.

Senegal, having already implemented their national data policy based on this blueprint, stands as the first African country to do so. The initiative, supported by both AU and European teams, aims to standardise data governance practices across the continent.

Speaking at a validation workshop for the draft document in Accra, the executive director of the Data Protection Commission, Patricia Adusei-Poku, shared insights into the current phase of the strategy

“The strategy is in draft format, we are now consulting various sectors in Ghana. Today we have here so many government institutions, public sector partners about 50 sectors represented here today, academia and all civil society discussing what the document should like and what should be in it to enable them to work smoothly This consultation is happening to contribute to the finalisation of the document. Following which our honorable minister will file it at cabinet to progress it for final approval.

“As soon as we finish today we’ll out together the final draft and present to the minister. We are hoping that by this time next year it will be in use”

The deputy minister of communication and Digitalisation, Charles Acheampong,  highlighted the objectives of the data policy and  its importance in the era of advancing technology.

Acheampong said, “With an increasing adoption of advanced technology in the management of data, the prioritisation of data governance is critical to the success of the digitisation effort.”

He added, “The purpose of the National Data Governance Strategy is to Develop both basic and economy-specific infrastructure. Facilitate access to public data. Create trust mechanisms for both the public and private sectors of the economy. Build capacity for individuals and institutions.”
